One purpose of modeling is to verify our conceptual understanding of phenomena. If a conceptual model is translated into a mathematical model that is able to predict experimental data, then one can be quite confident that the conceptual understanding is correct, at least within the range of experimentally obtained values.

A few models that have tried to model physiological response of microbial communities are presented here.
